For close to 2 decades now, we have earned a reputation of building a more prosperous society by helping solve pressing challenges such as Climate Change, Acess to Finance, Food Safety, and Women & Youth unemployment. We have been providing sustainable solutions through our business model that enables beneficiaries to access capital, increase agricultural productivity and access markets. We play a critical role of enhancing financial inclusion to spur economic growth and have implemented programmes that are critical to keeping our country food secure, as well as promoting and supporting use of resource efficient, clean and climate sensitive technologies and solutions for use in the agriculture value chain and at household levels.

MESPT Overview

MESPT was started as a government programme (Micro Enterprises Support Programme -MESP), funded by the European Union. The Programme was implemented from December 1997 to December 2003. In 2002, a Trust by the name Micro Enterprise Support Programme Trust (MESPT) was established officially as a development organization by the Government of Kenya and the European Union (EU). In 2007, the EU bequeathed its founder rights and status to the Royal Danish Embassy in Kenya, (DANIDA) who were enjoined through a Trust Deed of 2013.

The main goal of the Trust to date is to  support micro enterprise development, inclusive of agricultural production, agro-business and agro-processing to promote social, economic and environmentally sustainable growth through improving performance of value chains and their actors, increasing availability of financial services through wider and deeper delivery mechanisms and increasing trade opportunities through improved enterprise-level supply side management in business development services aimed at poverty alleviation through employment creation and sustainable micro-enterprises.

MESPT implements its mandate through two key segments: Value Chain & Enterprise Development (VC&ED) and through Financial services (FS). VC&ED largely focus on value chain and market systems development while FS is geared towards wholesale lending and capacity building of financial intermediaries (financial service providers) with a focus of enhancing financial access and creating financial inclusion in targeted excluded enterprises.

Key workstreams involve building the capacity of value chain stakeholders, increasing agricultural productivity and food safety systems, facilitation of market linkages and access to finance. MESPT promotes the uptake of green interventions and services that contribute to a greener economy as well as advocating for an enabling environment in the food safety sub sector in Kenya.

Where we work and with who

MESPT is currently implementing a portfolio of 4 projects with a budget value of KES. 2 billion in 21 counties of Kenya namely, Kilifi, Kwale, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Kajiado, Makueni, Machakos, Nakuru, Nyandarua, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Kakamega, Bungoma, Siaya, Kisii, Migori, Kirinyaga, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Meru and Laikipia. Additionally, the Credit and Business Development arm serves 7 counties namely Kiambu, Nyeri, Kitui, Mombasa, Kericho, Bomet and Kisumu.

MESPT is an enabler of development providing a facilitatory role and business development services. Our development approach entails working with various stakeholders to facilitate sustainable linkages that increase the competitiveness and profitability of targeted agricultural value chains and enterprises.
